Second Conditional
Form
if + past simple, would+infinitive You may use past simple or past continuous in the if-clause and would/could/might in the result clause. You may start the sentence with the if-clause or the future clause. Remember to use a comma if you start the sentence with the if-clause.

Use
Use the 2nd conditional when you talk about a condition (in the if-clause) which is impossibly or highly improbable to happen and so the result is improbable too.

Examples
▪ If we weren’t on a tight budget , we could spend more on advertising.
▪ We might avoid problems if you were listening to me carefully.
▪ If you studied harder, you would pass the test.
▪ The dog wouldn’t bark if you didn’t annoy her.
